That agreement is due to come to a close at the end of the 2025 campaign, but a clause can be triggered that keeps him in South Florida for another 12 months. Inter Miami have always stated their confidence in keeping Messi on board for 2026 - taking him through the next World Cup finals.

The Herons have already announced that Jordi Alba will be remaining at Chase Stadium, with Messi seemingly next in line for contract discussions. A positive update there is expected before the FIFA Club World Cup gets underway in mid-June.

Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano told reporters when asked for an update on Messi’s future: “To sign Jordi for the next two years is important to show stability, and hopefully, in a few weeks we can have some news about Leo. I think it will be very, very important for the club, the fans, and for MLS.”

Messi has enjoyed considerable success in America, claiming Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield and MVP honours. Inter Miami have endured a wobble of late, losing five of their last seven, but their talismanic captain can usually be relied upon to produce a spark in times of trouble.
